The symbol of the blue teddy bear with a plaster on its heart was designed specifically to raise awareness of Child Sexual Abuse. The symbol was launched in Trinidad and Tobago in 2008 and in the Caribbean Region in 2012. The blue teddy campaign came out of a research project at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus, Trinidad and Tobago, titled Breaking the Silence: A Multi-Sectoral Approach to Preventing and Addressing Child Sexual Abuse in Trinidad and Tobago. The development of the symbol and its unrestricted use, specifically for this issue, was inspired by the HIV/AIDS red ribbon campaign developed by an artists coalition in New York in the 1990’s.
